ABYC gets ‘Seal’ of approval

25 May 2014 By Port Elizabethan

This very calm seal popped into the Algoa Bay Yacht Club to say hello on Saturday evening 24 May 2014. Apologies about the light. She lay on the side of the slipway, chilling and listening to the music - as she appeared in distress, the Sailing Commodore phoned our local Bayworld who will check on her in the morning. According to Bayworld these seals are not used to people so do not run away or recognise two legged beasts as potentially threatening. Still - I am not going to get much … [Read more...] about ABYC gets ‘Seal’ of approval

What do sailors do when there is no wind?

2 May 2014 By Port Elizabethan

YouTube logo Port Elizabeth

Well some of them go and ask their First Mates to marry them! One of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club's long standing members, Graham Wentworth, who basically grew up and learned to sail at the club in Port Elizabeth is attending the ABYC Week Regatta taking place from 1 to 5 May 2014. Now Graham was ragged a bit - mainly by sailing wives I believe - around the teak reef last night about his tardiness in popping the question to long term First Mate, Marian Galloway. After the skippers meeting … [Read more...] about What do sailors do when there is no wind?

‘James Bond’ on North End Lake

Flyboarding North End Lake

Almost like a visit from James Bond - watch as this rider rises out of the 'mist' from the waters of the North End Lake on his flyboard. The Flyboard was invented in spring 2011 by a French watercraft rider, Franky Zapata. He built many prototypes before perfecting the design which allows the device to climb out of the water and be stable in the air. Watch as our Port Elizabeth rider rises out of the water, chickens out when a boat comes too close and then flies across the water as we see the … [Read more...] about ‘James Bond’ on North End Lake
