The amount paid on salaries for municipal employees across the country increased by nearly R7bn between 2013 and 2014, Statistics South Africa said on Tuesday. This was despite the fact that the number of municipal employees had decreased by 1 229, from 307 216 in 2013 to 305 987 in 2014, Statistician General Pali Lehohla told reporters in Pretoria. Inflation up 0.8% on June 2014
South Africa's Consumer Price Index (CPI) moderated to 6.3% year-on-year in July, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. In July, CPI continued to breach the 3% - 6% target range of the Reserve Bank, though at a lower rate than the 6.6% recorded in June 2014. Informal businesses back on the rise
Statistics South Africa has released the findings of a survey, which revealed that the number of people running informal businesses has increased from 1.1 million in 2009 to 1.5 million in 2013. According to the Survey of Employers and the Self-Employed (SESE) 2013 conducted by Stats SA, this was still lower than what was recorded in 2001, which was 2.3 million. South Africa's population is estimated to be at 54 million with the life expectancy of the population at 61-years of age, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) announced on Thursday. Stats SA released the Mid-year Population Estimates stated that life expectancy has increased from an estimated 52-years in 2005 to 61-years in 2014. Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) has announced that the seasonally adjusted real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at market prices for the fourth quarter of 2013 increased at an annualised rate of 3.8 percent. Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa says South Africa's overall crime rate continues to decline against the country’s growing population. Releasing the National Crime Statistics on Thursday, Mthethwa said there were 896 298 serious crime arrests in 2012/13 compared to 777 140 during the 2011/12 reporting period. PPI unchanged at 6.6%
The Producer Price Index remained unchanged at 6.6% in May, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Thursday. In April, the PPI - or price of goods leaving factories and mines - was at 6.6%. "From April 2012 to May 2012, the PPI for domestic output increased by 0.5%," said Stats SA. This was due to the increase in electricity prices, mining and quarrying among others while prices of agricultural goods fell by 0.1% over the month. March Retail Trade Sales up by 6.8%
Retail trade sales rose by 6.8% year-on-year in March, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. In February, retail sales rose by a downward revised 6.7% increase. According to Stats SA, retail trade sales for the first quarter of 2012 showed an increase of 5.9% compared to the first quarter of 2011.
