Southern Kings 13 (13) Sharks 58 (26)

14 July 2013 By Alan Straton

The Sharks ended off their season on a high note as they demolished a game Southern Kings side 58-13 in Durban on Saturday. The home side may have missed out on the playoffs after a poor run, but scored no fewer than 10 tries as they took the Vodacom Super Rugby newcomers apart with a mix of dominant forward play and some incisive backline movements. It was the Kings that scored first, shocking the home crowd as an ex-Shark, Waylon Murray, intercepted a long pass by Meyer Bosman to run the … [Read more...] about Southern Kings 13 (13) Sharks 58 (26)

And in better news the EP Kings keep hopes alive

21 April 2013 By Alan Straton

With a week of league action left, no team will go into the Vodacom Cup playoffs unbeaten after the Sharks XV and the Steval Pumas' impressive winning runs came to an end over the weekend. The Sharks lost to the EP Kings and The Lions beat the Pumas. The EP Kings reversed a 12-point half-time deficit to beat the Sharks XV by 27-23 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon, all but assuring the team from Port Elizabeth a place in the quarter-finals. The hosts scored three … [Read more...] about And in better news the EP Kings keep hopes alive

You Can’t Take the Boet out of Some Rugby Supporters

13 March 2010 Capacity Crowd

Starved as we are of top flight rugby in the region it saddens me to see how some rugby 'supporters' behave. Some people have a special switch hidden away in the deep recesses of what passes as a brain. Sadly this switch is activated by the intake of alcohol leading to some questionable ape like behaviour. The bad behaviour includes: Booing whenever a rival team takes a kick - NOT sportsmanlike at all Fighting in the stands Ryan-Lee Sharp posted a YouTube video of 'supporters' … [Read more...] about You Can’t Take the Boet out of Some Rugby Supporters

Southern Kings 12 (3) The Sharks 21 (12)

10 March 2013 By Alan Straton

The Sharks had to work very hard to beat the Southern Kings by 21-12 in front of a full house of 42,000 fans at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday evening, as Springbok flyhalf Pat Lambie recorded all of this team's points for the second successive week. Lambie was successful with six penalty goals and one dropped goal, while his counterpart from the Kings, Demetri Catrakilis, slotted all four of his attempts at goal. The six kickable penalties conceded by the … [Read more...] about Southern Kings 12 (3) The Sharks 21 (12)

From the Shark Tank to the Throne Room

8 March 2013 By Alan Straton

In Durban the home of the Sharks is the Shark Tank, in Port Elizabeth the home of the Kings is the Throne Room - a place for meting out royal justice and full of mighty warriors with the occasional jester! The Southern Kings are looking forward to a Throne Room full of supporters when they host The Sharks, Vodacom Super Rugby runners-up in 2012, in Port Elizabeth on Saturday evening. The Sharks, of course, used Port Elizabeth as a secondary base in the late 1990s, and have never lost … [Read more...] about From the Shark Tank to the Throne Room

Save yourself a long walk and get to the game early

8 March 2013 By Alan Straton

On the back of massive ticket sales for the Southern Kings vs Sharks game tomorrow, public parking is also available at the following schools surrounding the stadium, at a cost of R20 per vehicle: Hoërskool Cillie Sydenham Primary School Khumbulani High School Please note that parking at the abovementioned schools is limited, so it would be prudent to get to the stadium as early as possible (there is a curtain raiser when the EP Kings take on the Pampas, as well as lots of other … [Read more...] about Save yourself a long walk and get to the game early

The Southern Kings have announced their Super Rugby Squad to take on The Sharks at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 9th of March 2013. The team will run onto the field under the leadership of Darron Nell, after Director of Rugby Alan Solomons announced that last Skipper Luke Watson had been named on the bench following the blow he took to his throat during the game against the Western Force. Cycle of Injuries Moves to EP Kings Props

17 April 2012 By Alan Straton

After a run of injuries on the centre pairings, the EP Kings now face the stark reality of 5 props being injured ahead of their Vodacom Cup game against the Sharks on Saturday 21 April. Kick off is at 14:45. Far from this being a negative one must look back into the very recent past where the concept of 'depth' for the EP Kings was measured in how far down into the brown smelly stuff they had sunk and NOT in the growing stable of competent players willing and able to wear the red and black … [Read more...] about Cycle of Injuries Moves to EP Kings Props

Maybe SA’s increasing perception of Racism is a function of our legislature?

20 February 2012 By Alan Straton

This past week in Port Elizabeth presented an ideal opportunity to see many sporting and cultural events. The Longhair and I had a packed week attending one rugby and two soccer matches at the NMB Stadium - on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, the Concert in Victoria Park on Saturday and the Kurt Darren show at the Boardwalk on Thursday. Just for the record: We missed Antony and Cleopatra on Tuesday - Valentines day is for US and not to be shared with Romans and Egyptians who kill each other … [Read more...] about Maybe SA’s increasing perception of Racism is a function of our legislature?

My Biased and Amateur Opinion of the Kings Sharks Game

18 February 2012 By Alan Straton

Alan Solomons

Accompanying me to the game as chief typist for the live blogcast and photographer was the Apprentice Longhair. Actually she was drawn by the free food and drinks but ended up thoroughly enjoying the rugger - watch out Mexted, Bladen and chums, here comes a rival with beauty, brains and female points. My quick summing up of the Super Rugby friendlies that the Southern Kings have played: A good opportunity for Alan Solomons and his team to see all local SWD, EP and Border players in … [Read more...] about My Biased and Amateur Opinion of the Kings Sharks Game

Chumming close to recreational bathing areas increasing threat to public safety

4 December 2011 By NMB Communications

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently considering and urgent ban on fishing close to recreational beaches after it became apparent that chumming - a custom of throwing cut-up fish in the sea to catch sharks - is taking place close to surfing, paddling and swimming areas. The Municipality's Beach Office recommended a ban on angling from Kings Beach (Southern) Harbour Wall to Flat Rock (Beacon) and other beaches - 500 meters away from lifeguards demarcated bathing areas - such as … [Read more...] about Chumming close to recreational bathing areas increasing threat to public safety
