Scuba Diving – #MustSeeinPE

Scuba Diving

Divers in the know rate Port Elizabeth's Algoa Bay as one of the best dive spots in the world. The greater metropolitan area extends some distance to the west of Cape Recife, and this rocky part of the coastline includes a number of the most popular dive sites. "The Friendly City" has a subtropical climate with light rain throughout the year. The area lies between the … [Read more...] about Scuba Diving – #MustSeeinPE

Who will take ownership of the Baratz Wreck when it becomes a major disaster?

Baratz Diesel Fuel Leak Ropes

Dear MyPE Like a story from a novel one reads on social media, various online papers, in the news, on TV and on 50/50, the story of the Baratz as it gathers momentum and goes viral. What is it that makes this wreck so different to other fishing vessels sunk in all the years off Algoa Bay? Apparently 400 wrecks lie within and on the boundary of Algoa Bay so why is there such a hype about this one? Maybe the rescue of all crew after a mysterious accident by the brave Air Force and NSRI, … [Read more...] about Who will take ownership of the Baratz Wreck when it becomes a major disaster?

Did you know this about the Sardine run?

8 June 2015 By Alan Straton

Sardine Run

The annual Sardine run begins it's 'life' in the Agulhas Banks south-east of Port Elizabeth before making it's way up to Kwazulu-Natal to be scooped up in buckets in the surf. From February onwards sardines come into the area between Cape St Francis and Port Alfred, followed by thousands of dolphins, sharks, whales, gannets and penguins. From May onwards, when the first winter storms hit, these fish then begin to move north towards Durban. The almost 1000 km long swim to Kwa-Zulu Natal … [Read more...] about Did you know this about the Sardine run?

Dolphins race duck to bait ball

14 April 2015 By Alan Straton

Commons Dolphin

On Sunday 12 April at around 06h30 we launched with Expert Tours from the Noordhoek Ski Boat Club in a heavy sea mist and motored slowly south-east for around 5 kilometres – just free of the Noordhoek headland and directly into the path of any Dolphins that may be making their way towards Bird Island or along the coast with the sardines to feast on their required 15 to 25 kilograms of nutrition a day. With the mist all around and no landmarks to be seen the sense of being alone is … [Read more...] about Dolphins race duck to bait ball

Accompanying Rainer and Silke was Manfred - a retired armaments expert from Germany. The Noordhoek Ski Boat Club is experiencing explosive growth in membership lately (Yes, those 'boat … [Read more...] about Expertly guided to Dolphins
