Level Crossing Awareness Campaign
In a bid to deal with the spate of railway level crossing accidents, Transnet Freight Rail will once again embark on a campaign to warn motorists as well as pedestrians on the dangers of not observing safety precautions when approaching or crossing railway lines. The campaign, which starts on 18 March 2016 in Port Elizabeth, George and East London, will focus mainly on the major level crossings. Two men jump off Swartkops River railway bridge – one body recovered
At 14h30 on Sunday 12 October, NSRI Port Elizabeth volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from EC Government Health EMS reporting that they were on the scene at Swartkops River railway bridge, approximately a mile upstream from Swartkops River Mouth, where two men were reportedly missing in the river according to eye-witnesses. It appears that a local man aged in his early 20's had reportedly jumped off the bridge into the river but never surfaced.
