We saw a VERY RARE thing in Algoa Bay
When you least expect it Algoa Bay dishes up a gem of a sighting - three Orcas (Killer Whales) came cruising down the current line toward St Croix Island as we were heading out to sea. We turned and cruised alongside them for 90 minutes as Daddy, Mommy and Baby swam leisurely along. A really special sighting and a rare occurrence to actually be successful at hunting the hunter. We were guests of www.abmarine.co.za #orca #abmarine #whales #algoabay #sharethebay #portelizabeth #alanstraton - Taken … [Read more...] about We saw a VERY RARE thing in Algoa Bay
Nice Video Promo for Port Elizabeth – Disabled Orca Becomes Leader Of The Pod
A DISABLED orca first spotted by a couple in 2013 returns to greet them four years later - and now he’s leading the pod. In 2013, photographer and marine tour guides Rainer and Silke Schimpf spotted a young killer whale, who they named Sira, with a missing dorsal fin and right-side pectoral fin, leaving him unable to hunt for himself. But rather than be left to fend for itself or - even worse - die the young calf appeared to be cared for by members of its pod, which shared food with the … [Read more...] about Nice Video Promo for Port Elizabeth – Disabled Orca Becomes Leader Of The Pod
Face to Face with a Killer as Disabled Orca Returns to Port Elizabeth
It has been four years since Rainer and Silke Schimpf from Expert Tours in Port Elizabeth observed the disabled Orca, 'Sira', in Algoa Bay. At the time it appeared that Sira's family were assisting the Killer Whale with food and hunting on the Orca's behalf. See the www.MyPE.co.za report: Disabled Killer Whale With Missing Fins Survives. The May 2013 documenting of Sira being cared for by fellow pod members was at the time reported as one of the few times that killer whales have been seen … [Read more...] about Face to Face with a Killer as Disabled Orca Returns to Port Elizabeth

Orcas vs Dolphins – YouTube
The 'holy grail' of dolphin spotting is to come upon a huge pod being hunted by Orcas. The large amounts of sardines present within Algoa Bay ensure that many predators such as gannets, penguins, sharks and dolphins call the bay home. In turn the large amounts of dolphins attract Orcas to the bay on the hunt for a tasty dolphin morsel. Marine tour operators keep their ears firmly to the ground up and down our coast waiting for their informants to tell them of pods of Orcas moving … [Read more...] about Orcas vs Dolphins – YouTube

Killer Whales Supporting the Handicapped
On Saturday 27 April 2013 in the Aghullas current off of Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, Expert Tours guide, Rainer Schimpf and a German Film Crew witnessed two firsts as a pod of 7 Killer Whales (Orcas) hunted a Brydes Whale and then demonstrated that their complex social structures also seem to extend to caring for the handicapped. In waves of 3.5 metre in height and in pursuit of a bait-ball sighting Schimpf observed large splashes ahead of his boat which were quickly established as Orca's … [Read more...] about Killer Whales Supporting the Handicapped
Killer Whale’s Silent Seal Death
Tourists always want to be at the scene of the kill - it adds to the authentic experience of an African Safari, and when the safari is one out on the ocean amongst Killer Whales then the primal killer instinct is observed at such close range that one can taste the blood and feel the fear as desperate prey seek to elude the hunters.
