Brexit impact on Africa

13 July 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Brexit impact on Africa: The short-term implications of Brexit for African economies will be mainly noticeable through market volatility. However, according to Control Risks (www.ControlRisks.com) and NKC African Economics, the longer-term impacts on Africa from Brexit are speculative and depend as much on the attitude of future British governments as on the terms of exit. The longer term implications – both economic and geopolitical – hinge on what the terms of Britain leaving the … [Read more...] about Brexit impact on Africa

Top 30 grossing productions on the NAF Fringe

13 July 2016 By Alan Straton

The National Arts Festival reported "solid and consistent" support for the arts in a tough economic environment, as it announced its 2016 attendance and sales figures today. "We've seen a slight flattening of our numbers over last year's record-breaking attendance figures, with ticket sales and attendance at Festival events totalling 227 524. While this is around 5% down on last year, it exceeds sales from our 40th anniversary edition the previous year, in 2014. The long-term trajectory is … [Read more...] about Top 30 grossing productions on the NAF Fringe

Quoting Henry David Thoreau

13 July 2016 By Alan Straton

"I heartily accept the motto, "That government is best which governs least"; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe — "That government is best which governs not at all"; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have. Government is at best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient."Related Links: The … [Read more...] about Quoting Henry David Thoreau

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE As news breaks of two more shootings this afternoon in PE's Northern Areas, resulting in another death, the gangsterism crisis in our Metro has now reached catastrophic levels. The people of Nelson Mandela Bay are living in a constant state of fear. Gang shootings have now claimed the lives of at least seven people in the last thirteen days, and another eleven have been seriously wounded. Danny Jordaan's metro police farce has again been exposed as nothing more than an … [Read more...] about No plan to fight gangsterism in NMB as yet another person killed

Quoting Helen Zille

13 July 2016 By Alan Straton

"This government's preoccupation with race has nothing to do with empowering those disadvantaged by apartheid. It has everything to do with empowering a small elite through cronyism and patronage.""For the ANC to cry 'sabotage' the night before crucial local government elections shows just how desperate they are to disguise their incompetence and mismanagement.""The Presidency should stop concentrating on side issues, and focus on the big issues such as corruption, economic decline and … [Read more...] about Quoting Helen Zille

Athol Trollip

Below is an extract of a speech made today by DA Eastern Cape Provincial Leader Athol Trollip in Pearston, as part of his provincial campaign road show.
