Reckless transportation of manganese ore placing lives at risk

30 October 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The reckless transportation and storage of manganese ore in the Markman Township area of Nelson Mandela Bay has the potential to result in prolonged exposure that could lead to toxic levels for people working there. Even more shocking is the potential contamination of foodstuffs being packaged in the area, which could have a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals far outside the immediate vicinity. Excessive exposure to, or intake of, manganese can act … [Read more...] about Reckless transportation of manganese ore placing lives at risk

Grave concerns as Covid-19 sweeps through Nelson Mandela Bay

15 July 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is ill equipped to deal with the tragic increases in death rates due to the Covid-19 pandemic, because the uncaring ANC-led coalition of corruption government has failed to put plans in place. As a result, mortuaries are overflowing and cemeteries in the Metro are already at 60% of capacity. Undertakers and other stakeholders have raised concerns with the Metro’s inability to deal with the current crisis, frequently changing policies … [Read more...] about Grave concerns as Covid-19 sweeps through Nelson Mandela Bay

NMB Public Health Committee oversight must continue through use of technology

23 April 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay believes that the work of Council and its Committees’ cannot stop during a time of crisis. In fact it is more vital than ever that the Metro adapt and use technology to allow councillors to continue oversight. Since the announcement of the National Lockdown the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Executive Committee has provided councillors with piecemeal information regarding the Metro’s response to the Covid-19 … [Read more...] about NMB Public Health Committee oversight must continue through use of technology

Moratorium requested on the mass blocking of indigent deceased estate municipal accounts

10 February 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE It has come to the DA’s attention that Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s Budget and Treasury Department has started to block the electricity accounts of thousands of deceased estates in the Metro. The decision was taken as a result of some 16 000 deceased estate accounts being disqualified from the ATTP (Assistance-to-the-Poor) programme in December 2019. When there is an immovable property (a home) in a deceased estate, the onus is on the heirs of that estate to ensure that they … [Read more...] about Moratorium requested on the mass blocking of indigent deceased estate municipal accounts

Charity and welfare organisations suffer while NMB delays payments

23 January 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

https://youtu.be/Ia3stSA0mDM (Listen in Afrikaans) Dear MyPE The 2019 failures of the Nelson Mandela Bay governing coalition have spilled over to 2020. The Financial Assistance to External Organisations is a fund meant to assist NGO’s and other worthy causes in Nelson Mandela Bay. The more than 160 welfare and charitable organizations have been waiting since last year for funds that should have been paid to them already. Delays in the approval of these funds began in September 2019 … [Read more...] about Charity and welfare organisations suffer while NMB delays payments

NMB municipal “shutdown”

26 September 2019 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The current politically defensive Nelson Mandela Bay governing coalition is displaying a callous carelessness by delaying the financial allocations to charitable causes in the city. Today, 26 September 2019, a subcommittee of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Budget and Treasury Committee that deals with financial assistance to charitable organisations was unable to finalise the allocations as it lacked a quorum to proceed. Of the nine councillors who are designated to … [Read more...] about NMB municipal “shutdown”

Bobani administration continues to rack up frivolous legal bills

20 September 2019 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay acknowledges the judgement handed down in the Makhanda High Court yesterday, 19 September 2019, against Mayor Mongameli Bobani and the then acting city manager, Peter Nielson, in the matter of Grey Moodliar Attorneys and the municipality’s irrational removal of them as attorneys for the Metro. At a Council meeting during which the decision to remove Grey Moodliar was taken, the DA attempted to convince the current coalition of … [Read more...] about Bobani administration continues to rack up frivolous legal bills

Failure to spend capital budget by end of week will cost NMB millions

26 June 2019 By Alan Straton

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is on the verge of forfeiting in excess of R420-million back to National Treasury, because they have been unable to spend the money, despite empty political promises to do so. What makes this dismal state of affairs even worse, is that the funds being forfeited is money that is desperately needed for projects that would have improved the lives of Nelson Mandela Bay residents. I have today written to Premier Mabuyane to request his … [Read more...] about Failure to spend capital budget by end of week will cost NMB millions
