Reckless transportation of manganese ore placing lives at risk

The reckless transportation and storage of manganese ore in the Markman Township area of Nelson Mandela Bay has the potential to result in prolonged exposure that could lead to toxic levels for people working there.

Even more shocking is the potential contamination of foodstuffs being packaged in the area, which could have a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals far outside the immediate vicinity.

Excessive exposure to, or intake of, manganese can act as a neurotoxin that can lead to irreversible neurological damage, with symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease, or even death!

A recent oversight inspection to the area by myself and fellow councillor, Mthokozisi Nkosi, found several facilities where manganese ore was being stored, despite being clearly unsuitable for that purpose. Trucks were also seen transporting the ore to and from these storage facilities, with their load beds uncovered.

The resulting plumes of fine black manganese dust has accumulated on every possible surface in the area, from windows and walls to parked cars and air vents. This dust is potentially toxic and could be potentially fatal to people in the area.

Several businesses we engaged with raised their concerns over the alleged hazardous transportation, handling and storage of the manganese, and the subsequent pollution.

What became abundantly clear is that municipal by-laws as well as various health and safety regulations were being flouted. These breaches have been reported to the municipality several times in the past, with little to no effect on the dangerous operations after compliance notices were issued.

I will again write to the Executive Director of Public Health to stress the urgent and dangerous nature of these practices and request a comprehensive investigation. The investigation must include determining whether the storage facilities are fit for purpose in terms of the current zoning scheme, and whether the operations are in accordance with the appropriate health and safety regulations.

If they are not, immediate action must be taken!

I will also be engaging with my DA colleagues at the Eastern Cape Legislature, to request that they bring this matter to the attention of the relevant provincial departments.

We cannot allow unscrupulous individuals to get away with placing the health and wellbeing of others at risk through their flagrant and willful disregard of bylaws and health and safety standards.
