The count down to the main Human Rights Day celebration continues. As part of the Human Rights Month events, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will on 16 and 17 of March 2016 host Human Rights School Debates. Marking Human Rights Day the Centre for Constitutional Rights presented its fourth annual Human Rights Report Card indicating where, in the opinion of the Centre, South Africa has been making progress with regard to human rights and where it has been regressing. The report card below awarded the following grades for human rights: A = Excellent; B = Good; C = Average; D = Poor; and E = Very Poor. Human Rights should not only mean political freedom
It is interesting that in South Africa Human Rights are often perceived as certain fundamental political rights pertaining to racial equality and the right to vote. I cannot blame people for having such a narrow view of human rights if we take into account our recent tainted history of inequality under apartheid. We should not however, forget that human rights encompass civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights.
