The National Department of Transport yesterday pronounced on the approval of the application to grant Karpowership access to the three Ports of Ngqura, Durban and Saldanha Bay for a period of 20 years. The application was approved by the Minister on 26 February 2023. AIDC EC warns on energy tariff increases

The Automotive Industry Development Centre in the Eastern Cape (AIDCEC) has warned that the electricity tariff increase of 15% effective from April 1, will slam the brake on the South African automotive supply chain's drive for greater levels of global competitiveness. Doors are now open for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the engineering and construction sectors to enter the Eskom Business Investment Competition (BIC), the Eskom Development Foundation (EDF) announced. Eskom earlier this afternoon issued s a statement informing the public that; "The power system is severely constrained." According to Eskom the return to service of five generating units has been delayed whilst a further two units were either shut down or tripped. The return to service of two generating units at the Tutuka power station has been delayed as well as units at Duvha, Matimba and Kusile power stations. No load shedding expected this weekend

Following the return to service of four generation units, no load shedding is expected for the rest of the week, says Eskom. The return to service of the four units, has helped Eskom to relieve pressure on the system. “These generation units returned more than 1 500MW capacity to the system. This took total generation capacity returned to the system since 10 July to more than 3 500MW,” said Eskom in a statement on Thursday evening. With a constrained power system, Eskom may be forced to implement load shedding, it said on Friday. “Five generation units were taken off the grid, significantly raising the possible need for load shedding. South Africa can’t afford municipal price increases while dealing with the disastrous fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic OUTA is calling on the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) to block any increases in municipal electricity tariffs.
