Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Des Van Rooyen says efforts are underway to classify the drought as a national disaster. Municipality to enforce stricter water consumption by-laws
As the critical water situation continues, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality calls on all residents and stakeholders who had been granted Water Restriction Concessions (exemptions) to re-apply, as the old exemptions are no longer valid. Failure to re-apply and continuation of water usage in terms of the old exemption will result in the Municipality imposing water restriction penalties. Nooitgedagt Work to Recommence
The Nooitgedagt Phase 3 budget has been restored to R93 million, bringing the project back to life. Contractors walked off site last week when it was announced that the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) was slashing the budget by R34 million. The City of Cape Town Council voted today to introduce further punitive tariffs to help curb water usage. See: Shit Just Got Real Cape Town - residents limited to 50 litres of water. Taking the lowest tariff and usage figure from the newly published rates the City of Cape Town will now be charging R145.98 over a month for usage of 6000 litres.
