Christmas wage increase for domestic workers

South Africa's Domestic Worker Sector will receive a new upwardly adjusted minimum wage with effect from 1 December 2016. The latest relief ahead of the festive season will be applicable until 30 November 2017. New wage structure for domestic workers

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant has approved the new wage structure for the domestic workers' sector following the upward adjustment of the minimum wage. The latest relief comes on the eve of the festive season. The minimum wage adjustment is in line with the legislation to protect workers in South Africa in sectors in which they are likely to be exploited, or where worker organisations and trade unions are absent and workers are not covered by regulating mechanisms. A Happy Christmas increase for Domestic Workers

On 25 November 2013, the Minister of Labour announced an above consumer price index increase in the statutory minimum wage for the domestic workers. The new wages, effective from 1 December 2013 to 30 November 2014, will be increased by one percent above the consumer price index for domestic workers working in urban areas and two percent above the consumer price index in rural areas. South Africa ratifies international Domestic Workers Convention

A United Nations treaty entered into force on 5 September 2013 will extend the labour and social rights of some 53 million domestic workers around the world. It is the 189th International Labour Organization (ILO) convention and was adopted during the 100th session of the International Labour Organization. From today, the Domestic Workers Convention will be legally binding for signatory countries. The treaty was adopted in 2011 by the ILO and is the first of its kind. Early Christmas Present for Domestic Workers

Domestic workers received an early Christmas present this year courtesy of the Minister of Labour. An increase in the minimum wages payable to domestic workers was announced by the Minister on 28 November which is effective as from 1 December 2011.
