Port Operations Back on Stream

Following the high winds on Tuesday that toppled a Straddle Carrier Crane in to the water of the harbour Transnet has announced that all port operations (including, but not limited to Shipping operations and terminal operations) have returned to normal. Due to gusting winds an IMPSA crane collapsed on 30 October 2018 at Berth 103 at the PE Container Terminal overhanging into the port entrance channel. As a result of this, and in the interest of navigational safety, all commercial shipping movements in the Port of Port Elizabeth have been suspended until the port entrance channel has been cleared. The TNPA released this brief statement this afternoon: Port Elizabeth experienced winds in excess of 50 knots per hour on Tuesday morning. This resulted in the damage of a Transnet Port Terminals ship–to–shore crane on the quayside. No employees were injured. If you go down to the Harbour today you will be in for a big surprise - a container crane has blown over in the high winds and is hanging over into the entrance/exit channel. This sighting was confirmed earlier by Kyle De Vry of AB Marine who also says that the sea conditions inside the Port are horrendous and suggests that all vessel owners check their mooring lines post haste as the wind is expected to increase somewhat through the day.
