Chumming close to recreational bathing areas increasing threat to public safety

4 December 2011 By NMB Communications

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently considering and urgent ban on fishing close to recreational beaches after it became apparent that chumming - a custom of throwing cut-up fish in the sea to catch sharks - is taking place close to surfing, paddling and swimming areas. The Municipality's Beach Office recommended a ban on angling from Kings Beach (Southern) Harbour Wall to Flat Rock (Beacon) and other beaches - 500 meters away from lifeguards demarcated bathing areas - such as … [Read more...] about Chumming close to recreational bathing areas increasing threat to public safety

I Admit the Motivation to ‘CHUM’ is High

8 April 2011 By Alan Straton

During the Optimist Selections this past week, Erika and Harry and myself manned the finish boat - a highly technical job requiring a strong back and arms, resistance to the sun, the ability to talk cr*p to keep yourself entertained, mastery of basic mathematics involving counting to 30, the ability to write and tell the time as well as being able to discern a certain number of basic angles. But, the devil does find work for idle hands and, in my case, I sneaked a Lloyd Chumming Maneuvere - … [Read more...] about I Admit the Motivation to ‘CHUM’ is High

Environmental Affairs Responds to Illegal Chumming Incident off of PE Beaches

So Was Someone Actually Chumming off of our Beaches?

29 March 2011 By Alan Straton

It seems as though the concern that a Port Elizabeth based sea going tour operator was 'chumming' off of our beaches has got a number of people's knickers in a knot. The 'restraint' shown by locals in not wanting to get involved has been telling. The 'Noseweek of the Fishing Industry', Feike, has once again not pulled any punches and come out fighting for our marine resources and the people who benefit from the proper exploitation thereof. The facts of the 'situation' are: Over two … [Read more...] about So Was Someone Actually Chumming off of our Beaches?

I Wouldn’t Swim Off of Hobie or Kings Beach for a While

24 March 2011 By Alan Straton

Apparently a sea-going tour operator was filmed in Algoa Bay today chumming for sharks. Now the fact that said tour operator had a film crew onboard that is connected to an internationally known and veneered television station and that the permit carried by said tour operator does not allow for any such activity is not enough. The chumming activity 'apparently' took place along Hobie Beach - Port Elizabeth's erstwhile Blue Flag beach and very popular swimming spot that hosts the very … [Read more...] about I Wouldn’t Swim Off of Hobie or Kings Beach for a While
