Iconic Apple Express revival could see shoppers transported by train to mega mall

Plans are afoot to introduce custom-built 'green' trains - either solar or liquefied petroleum gas-powered - which will run daily along the iconic Apple Express railway line between the city's beachfront and the R1.7bn Baywest Mall. The Apple Express Volunteers association has been making slow but steady progress towards their goal of bringing the Apple Express back. Transnet Freight Rail have undertaken a line inspection and are currently assessing the cost to repair the damage on the line following last year's heavy rain storm. There is some support from within the municipality and Transnet to resume the Apple Express tourist service but progress is very slow. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) is investigating all facts around the downscaling of the city's iconic tourism products because their loss will impact negatively on its mandate to market the city.
