The preliminary 2017/18 Festive Season report indicates an 11% decline in fatalities on the roads when compared to the same period in the previous year. “Our preliminary festive season fatalities for the period starting 1 December 2017 to 9 January 2018 show that there were 1 527 people who died on the roads in that period compared to 1 714 fatalities in the same period the previous year,” Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi said. A total of 845 fatalities have been recorded on South African roads since 1 December till 19 December, says Transport Minister Dipuo Peters. Addressing the media on Tuesday in Midrand on the state of the Festive Season Road Safety Campaign, Minister Peters said the number of fatalities has increased by 17% compared to the same period in the previous year. East Cape festive season fatalities increase

Nearly 1 800 people died in accidents during the festive season, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Tuesday. A total of 1 755 people lost their lives between December 1, 2015 and January 11 this year, she told reporters in Pretoria. This was an increase of 14% from last season's figures of 1 535, between December 1, 2014 and January 5, 2015. The Eastern Cape government has declared the two accidents that left 45 people dead at the weekend, a provincial disaster. Thirty-five people died on when the bus in which they were travelling plunged into a dry river near the Congo Bridge near Nkelekethe Village, between Butterworth and Willovale. In a separate accident, 10 people died when a Toyota Quantum overturned, seven people died at the scene and three died in hospital.
