Why is PE known as the Friendly City? Let the Clipper sailors tell you!

10 November 2017 By Alan Straton

hotelplanner.com

Let's illustrate just how friendly a city Port Elizabeth is with a recent practical example; The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race set off from Cape Town on 31 October, destination: Freemantle, Australia via the notorious Southern Ocean. On the second day into Leg 3, the yacht Greenings ran aground off of Kommetjie, leaving the crew and skipper without a yacht to sail on. Four days into Leg 3 days the call went out that round the world sailor, Greg Adams, on yacht hotelplanner.com, had … [Read more...] about Why is PE known as the Friendly City? How the Sport of Yachting Started in Algoa Bay

27 September 2017 By Alan Straton

Bess Ketch

In 1933, before the breakwater was completed it was the practice of the tugs of Messina Bros., Coles and Searle (Pty) Ltd., to ferry passengers to and from the liners which were anchored offshore in Algoa Bay. The last tug for the day was at 4:30 pm and passengers who missed this tug then had no choice but to either spend the night on board ship or in the bustling little city of Port Elizabeth. Out of this then came the opportunity for an enterprising Port Elizabethan by the name of Bredell … [Read more...] about How the Sport of Yachting Started in Algoa Bay

Algoa Bay yacht club debacle

25 August 2017 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE If the DA is serious about creating jobs through tourism in the metro then it needs to intervene urgently in the spat between the Algoa Bay yacht club and Transnet National Ports Authority. Without a yacht club there will quickly be no marina, which means no yachts in what was once marketed as one of the most perfect bays in the world for watersport. The city will also no longer host national and international regattas. Transnet lost us the highly prestigious Volvo Ocean … [Read more...] about Algoa Bay yacht club debacle

24 July 2017 By Alan Straton

According to figures gleaned from many sources the benefit to the city from domestic tourism generated as a result of rugby and soccer per annum pales into significance when compared with … [Read more...] about Let’s Box Clever and Maximise the Return from Watersport, Specifically Sailing

20 June 2017 By Alan Straton

"With 350 kg's of plastic being dumped in the ocean every second, it is projected that there will be more plastics than fish in the ocean by 2050. This pollution is killing millions of marine animals and sea birds each year, damaging sensitive ecosystems, affecting environmental and human health. Aside from lost opportunities the cost to Africa run's in to billions annually," said SST Director Dr Tony Ribbink at a recent presentation to members and sailors at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club.
