Tackle PE’s three popular beaches

8 March 2016 By Alan Straton

Another great open water swimming opportunity this weekend with the City Lodge 3 Beaches Challenge at Pollok Beach.

This Sunday morning sees the popular City Lodge Hotels Group 3 Beaches Challenge taking place from Pollok Beach and starts at 9am. The event offers open water swimmers, surf lifesavers and runners the opportunity to race along the entire Port Elizabeth beachfront.

For this event, participants race between each of the major Port Elizabeth beaches and participation is possible as an individual, in a team of two or in a team of four. The race starts and finishes at Pollok Beach with the first leg being the 1.6km stretch to Hobie Beach. At each of the beaches the participants will exit the water to round a BOS transition area before continuing with the next leg. Second leg is an 800m stretch from Hobie Beach to Humewood Beach, third leg is 1.1km from Humewood Beach to Kings Beach and the final leg is a 3km run from Kings Beach back to Pollok Beach.

The Surf Lifesaving category is their Lifesaving Ironman with the order of events being Surf Ski, swim, malibu board and run.

With over 150 participants having already registered, the event is looking forward to a record entry for this year. Late entries are still possible on www.3beaches.co.za and on Sunday morning at Pollok Beach with a late entry fee of R150 per person applying. The first 80 who registered will each receive a branded silicone swim cap whilst all finishers receive a chilled sports drink from hydration sponsor BOS. Category winners will receive great BOS hamper prizes with lots of lucky draw prizes up for grabs on Sunday including Caltex fuel vouchers.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
