An exciting new addition to the sports program aimed at boosting Nelson Mandela Bay as Africa’s Water Sport capital is the Nelson Mandela Bay Mile, a 1.6km Ocean Swim on the 31st December.
The event will see participants swimming from Humewood Beach down to Kings Beach on the last day of the year and is in response to numerous requests from holiday makers for more sports based activities during this period.
“Whilst the city offers unprecedented water sports events throughout the year, in the past there’s been nothing for our visitors to enjoy during this peak season. We are trying to establish the city as the Water Sport Capital so it’s only fair that visitors get to compete with the locals in some iconic water sport events.” said event organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports.
The city already hosts Africa’s oldest open water swimming event in the annual SPAR River Mile with the Nelson Mandela Bay Mile offering the ocean equivalent which will take swimmers across the beachfront from Humewood to Kings Beach.
The swim will be a one way swim with the natural flow of the ocean with swimmers reporting for entry at Kings Beach on the 31st and then walking along the promenade to Humewood for the 9am start. The event is expected to be a great spectacle with great viewing along the entire stretch of the beachfront.
Online entry and further information is available on www.zports.co.za/NMBMile. Entry forms are available at News Cafe, The Boardwalk and late entries will be taken on the morning but additional fees will apply.
