Surely Dr Msengana-Ndlela is in breach of her entitled sick leave?

17 July 2013 By Alan Straton

Dr Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela has held the position of City Manager of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality since 1 March 2013.

Asof 17 July 2013 she has been off on Sick Leave for close on a month.

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act states that workers may take the number of days they would normally work in a 6 week period for sick leave on full pay in a 3 year period.

However, during the first 6 months of employment, workers are only entitled to 1 day of paid sick leave for every 26 days worked.

I realise that these guidelines do not apply to: Workers in senior management – i.e. Dr Msengana-Ndlela OR Workers who earn in excess of an amount stated in terms of  section 6 (3) of the Act – i.e. Dr Msengana-Ndlela.

BUT

I was always of the opinion that these guidelines DID NOT apply because senior, well paid staff need to set an example and take less sick leave than the herd.

Now it would be interesting to find out if the ratepayers are going to have another one ripped in order to foot this new bill for sick leave which surely cannot be part of an agreed contract between the ratepayers and Dr Msengana-Ndlela. Not to mention the fact that the shenanigans around appointing another ACTOR to our municipal stage is also costing us good money as those entrusted with good governance roll in our hard earned cash hoping to make it stick to their greedy snouts and other unmentionable orifices.
