The Springbok Rugby Women’s World Cup team will be smarting after their last-minute 21-17 loss to Fiji in their Pool C encounter at Waitakere Stadium in Auckland on Sunday 16 October 2022.
Scores were tied at 14-14 from the 60th until the 78th minute, when Libbie Janse van Rensburg edged her team ahead with a penalty goal, only for Fiji to regain the restart and score the winning try with less than a minute to go.

HEAD COACH STANLEY RAUBENHEIMER
On the 21-17 loss to Fiji: “Firstly congratulations to Fiji, they were awesome, they worked their butts off and I think they thoroughly deserved to win that game. Although we had the win with a minute left, we didn’t deal with the kick off. We just had to take it and, had we done so, it would have been a different result. We’ve talked about these things in training. It looked like we lacked a bit of energy at times in the match and I don’t know where that might have come from, but I must commend the Fijian team for their fighting spirit. As we saw from the England-France game the other night, there was very little space and very few opportunities. In attack, I thought we looked too much for the contact. These things get talked about but, I suppose in the heat of the battle, sometimes you go back to your default. We overplayed that a bit. We knew Fiji would target us and we targeted them because we are in a strong pool with England and France. So that was an opportunity for us but we didn’t take our chances.”
On what the Springboks will take from it: “It’s a tough one for us but maybe a good lesson for the future. Hopefully this tournament will kick start what can happen in the game in South Africa and at least we are going back with a lot of experience that we didn’t have.”
On the game against England: “They are the number one team in the world and there is only one way for us to go – we must leave everything out on the field from an attitude and a knowledge point of view. That’s all we can do. Stranger things in sport have happened!”
CAPTAIN NOLUSINDISO BOOI
On the defeat: “At the end of the day this was a 50:50 game, Fiji wanted it as much as we did and everyone in the team is disappointed with the way the result came out. We let the management down.”
On the positives: “There were moments when we had good runs and there were moments when we put in good hits but they won the game because they stuck to their plan and we didn’t stick to ours.”
On England: “The only thing now that we need to do is to make sure this game is history. We can’t do anything about it now, we have to put it to one side and focus on the next game. We will have to give everything that we have.”
