If between ski-boats and the spears, 5 decent fish are taken a month from
an area, thats 600 fish in 10 yr. Steenbras reach maturity around 8 yr –
decent fish are 20-40 yr & generally residential, ontop of the trawlers
(who cant fish the shallower reefs), must make quite a sizable dent in the
steenbras populations. The old Durban Ski-boat club had 1950’s photos of
skis full of big black steenbras. Nowdays if a boat can catch one that size
its quite a feat despite the much improved equipment.
Killing steenbras is not at all cool. The stock numbers are very low. That
goes for the white,silver, red and black steenbras. They are very slow to
mature and that is why tgheir stocks have been effected so badley.

its different if you only kill 1 or 2 or 3 . not like trauleres killing 100
or 200 or 300 steenbrass
