It will be a morning of entertainment and fun for participants in the annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer this Saturday.
Isuzu Southern Kings players will be up early after their Friday Guinness PRO14 Round 7 fixture against Scarlets at the Madibaz Stadium to lead 12 000 or more participants to Walk as One to show solidarity with those affected by cancer.
The team’s participation in the event will start with the match, as they will all be wearing pink socks.
On Saturday morning (October 27) the crowd, which is scheduled to include most of the members of the Executive Council of the Eastern Cape, will be entertained and led by a troupe of African drummers.
There will also be entertainment by local artists, as well as give-aways, on The Boardwalk festival lawn from around nine.
Marine Drive from The Boardwalk to Admiralty Way will be closed from seven till ten in the morning.
The annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer is supported by the Eastern Cape departments of health, and of sport, recreation, art and culture.
According to the long-range weather predictions it will be a perfect day for the five kilometre walk along the beach-front, starting and ending at The Sun Boardwalk.
“Once again there will be a wave of pink flowing along the beach-front, with at least seven thousand participants wearing their 2018 pink T-shirts,” says Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.
The first seven thousand entrants to the event qualified for the T-shirts.
“They had all been snapped up more than two weeks before the big day. That just shows how powerfully this event helps raise awareness of cancer,” he says.
Participants wanting to add to the “pinkness” will be able to purchase pink doeks on the day from Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), which is the beneficiary of the funds raised.
Funds raised by the 2018 Big Walk will go towards the purchase of a FotoFinder Mole analyser. In 2017 the event raised R570 000.
As part of the run-up to the event the Eastern Cape department of health hosted a number of testing and information days at centres around the province. In 2017 over 900 people were tested through this outreach. There will also be free screening on the day of the event.
Participants will be able to personalise their support for those affected by cancer by writing on their walk numbers who they are walking as one for, and to sign on two Isuzu MU-X Adventure SUVs, which will be parked under the arch in the Second Avenue entrance.

The walk starts at eight on Saturday, October 27.
Entry forms are available from Brian Bands in Cape Road, Total Sports stores in Port Elizabeth and Algoa FM. An online entry portal is also available at on the Algoa FM website.
Online entry fee for the 5km walk is R65, manual entries cost R70.
