Failure has many unintended consequences, the worst of which would be to see our NMB Stadium in a pile of useless rubble due to our failure.
- We failed at keeping the Southern Kings alive
- We failed at Eastern Province Rugby
- We failed at keeping Rugby Sevens in Gqeberha
- We failed at Chippa United
- We failed at getting a Springbok Test
- We failed at attracting top flight football
- We failed at cleaning the North End Lake
- We failed at attracting mega artists to Gqeberha
We need to arrest this failure lest we see our Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium also fail and fall into rack and ruin.
The reason for this ‘doom and gloom’?
Reports that the Cape Town Stadium is ‘turning the corner’ and making the financial burden on ratepayers less. There is even talk of a ‘temporary’ roof being slotted over the stadium at an estimated cost of R30 Million. This, to host a formal version of Cape Flats entertainment called UFC – “Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie” – to host our World Champion Dricus du Plessis, also known by his initials DDP – a South African professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where he is the current UFC Middleweight Champion and the first South African to win a UFC championship.
We need to remember one lesson here – merely paying for our stadium is not enough. We have to support all those who use it as well.
