The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is replacing around 80 000 meters in the Metro.
Cynics are now saying that this is just another money making project targeting the normal soft suburban households. And some may have that suspicion as water bills for over a million rand are being received by one or two consumers.
The real reason for the change is that some of the older meters may underread by as much as 20% – according to an Acting analyst in the Metered Services Budget & Treasury.
Nothing is said about meters over reading nor about the fact that the water meters are being replaced with plastic rather than brass models.
The water meter installers are so enthusiastic (some cynics say their enthusiasm is because they are scoring on the scrap metal market!) that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality admin team cannot keep up as more meters are being installed per week than being processed.
The process from installation of new meter to adjusted billing can take four months so people are being requested to continue paying what they have always paid until the billing matters are resolved.
Best of Luck new water meter recipient.
