Jessica Baker who developed the skills-based programme following her Masters research in social work at Stellenbosch University, says of the new programme: “Parents face various challenges when raising their children. These challenges are often the reason for parents attending parent education programmes. Group programmes offer support which empowers parents to deal effectively with relationships address behavioural and emotional problems and learn relevant parenting skills in a safe and supportive environment.”

She adds about the name of the programme: “The parents we met with gave us the name, Siphuhlisa Ulwazi Lwabazali (meaning parents empowered with knowledge). To them it is a very powerful phrase and gives them strength. Which is what we aim to do.”

The parenting programme builds on Early Inspiration’s work with teachers and early childhood development, Early Inspiration MD and founder Dr. Lauren Stretch comments saying: “Giving children a sense of belonging, showing them love and investing in their education supports children’s long-term successes and will in time eradicate poverty – one family at a time. ‘

“Parents want to do the best they can for their children, and a lot of parenting is instinctive, but by sharing experience, knowledge and skills, parents can have confidence in how they bring up their child.”
