The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape urges members of the community to strictly adhere to the restrictions issued with regard to the taking of alcohol to beaches and the setting off of fireworks.
“Check points and roadblocks will be set up by the SAPS in conjunction with other Law Enforcement Officials to prevent the use of alcohol on beaches and to ensure that fireworks are only used in designated areas. I urge community members to personalize their safety at all times as it is not just the responsibility of the police alone to do so. Always remember not to become careless and vulnerable to holiday crime. I want to reiterate that the SAPS will not tolerate nor condone any form of public drinking and disorderly behavior during New Year’s celebrations and party bashes.” said Major General Zamuthango Mki today.
A call is once again made to liquor operators in the Province to comply with the conditions of their liquor licenses and take up their share of responsibility towards the safety of their patrons.
Community members are advised that drinking of intoxicating substances or engaging in festive activities should be done in moderation and without infringing on the rights of others. Extra precautionary measures must be taken when visiting the places where alcohol is sold and consumed.
Members of the Search and Rescue Unit will also be out in full force on all beaches and major dams in the province during the festive season to ensure the safety of those taking to the waters. Community members are urged to ensure that children of 12 years and below must always wear life jackets when on the water. Parents are advised to always know where their children are and not let them go swimming unsupervised. People who are not rated to be on the water after dark are also be cautioned to leave the water from 18:00.
SAPS Management, led by Hawks Head, Lt General Ntlemeza and Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner will visit the Eastern Cape beaches in Port Elizabeth, East London and Centane on the 1 January 2016. This is part of the police’s “Back-to-Basics” policing approach linked to the festive season plan with intensified efforts on deployment of police officials at public spaces including beaches in a bid to curb crime. The objective of the visit is to ensure that local communities and visitors feel safe.
The visits are scheduled as follows:
- Port Elizabeth – Hobie Beach, Pollock Beach & Kings Beach at 10:00
- East London – Eastern Beach, Orient Beach at 13:00
- Centane – Qolorha By sea at 15:00
