The Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth West hosted their annual Wine Auction last Friday night at VW Tavcor Embassy where 350 people attended the glittering event and raised over R80,000 for charity.
Lot’s included some valuable sporting memorabilia, including the helmet Dave Callaghan wore when he struck 169 not out against New Zealand after overcoming cancer. Angela Newton, convenor, commented, “It was a significant contribution to the evening as his victory in life mirrored the many small victories enabled through Rotary projects throughout Nelson Mandela Bay and the world.” His lot also included a workshop for 6 children before the start of the next cricket season.
Vinimark, Winezani and Michael White Wines were represented on the tasting floor and in the lots. The bottles opened for tasting were unanimously enjoyed, and not surprisingly so because many of them have won awards throughout South Africa and internationally. This was perfectly complemented by masterchef Jayne Davies of InFood, Jefferys Bay.
Local socialites and celebrities in attendance included Jaco Rademeyer, Dave and Sharon Callaghan, Gianna Doubell, Lionel and Maureen Heath, Greg and Vanessa Billson, Adrian Dessie, and Sandra Reynolds Price (multiple grand slam tennis winner and highest ever ranked South African woman).
Andrew Angles, Sales Manager at Tavcor, stated, “This event is one of the premier events in Port Elizabeth, with the class of lots, sterling organization and wonderful achievements of Rotary being made known. Tavcor is proud to be associated with this event this year.”
The proceeds will be split between Polio Plus, Save-a-Pet, The Rhino Project and the Kleinskool Outreach.
The final bit of excitement for the evening came from the car draw. A retired teacher, Maureen Heath, was the deserving winner as she has a long track record of involvement in our community.
