2021 FNB Varsity Cup Player That Rocks Cohen Jasper reflects on his career with FNB CUT and talks about his ambitions to represent South Africa at the highest level.
Last year, Jasper scored seven tries in the 2021 FNB Varsity Cup, including the winner in FNB CUT’s first-ever win against FNB Maties.
Jasper marked these tries with a unique ‘surfing-style’ celebration. It wasn’t long before Cheetahs coach Hawies Fourie was drawing comparisons between Jasper and Bok superstar Cheslin Kolbe.
Jasper drove away in a Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.5Xi after winning the Overall Player That Rocks award. On the back on his performances for FNB CUT, he was contracted by the Free State Cheetahs.
What is the fondest memory of your FNB Varsity Cup career?
I will never forget the moment last season when CUT recorded their first-ever victory over Maties in Pretoria.
What makes the whole concept of Varsity Cup so special for students?
There’s such a special vibe around the Monday Night Lights! As a player, you get to express yourself and showcase your talents. That can open so many new doors for your career.
Which player do you look up to?
Definitely Cheslin Kolbe. I just love and respect his playing style.
Who do you think are the favourites to win the 2022 FNB Varsity Cup?
That is a difficult one. At this stage, I believe that Shimlas and Tuks are the teams to beat.
How do you think your old team will go?
CUT have a lot of young players this year. They’re in a rebuilding phase, but I still believe that they will push for a place in the semi-finals.
What more do you want to achieve in your rugby career?
I want to represent the Springboks and wear that green and gold jersey. I would also love to play for the Blitzboks.
How are things progressing with the Cheetahs?
We are doing very well at this stage. Hopefully I will score some more tries and do some more ‘surfing’ in the end zone.
