The penultimate round of the Investec Night Relay at North End Lake on Thursday evening has participants reaching for their slippers.
Through the Investec Night Relay, runners and walkers have already contributed over R4,000 to Reach for a Dream’s national campaign, where the public are encouraged to donate by buying a sticker and wearing their slippers to work on Friday 3 August.
“We have chosen to support a local charity through each Investec Night Relay event,” says Michael Zoetmulder of Zports Events. “The timing is perfect, and so we are encouraging all our participants to buy tickets and support the Reach for your Slippers campaign. We even have a team walking in their slippers on Thursday evening!”
Last month, the Investec Night Relay supported the ACVV Kamvalethu Centre, the only drop-in centre for street children in Nelson Mandela Bay. Participants and friends of the Investec Night Relay Series donated goods and services for the centre
Over 130 corporate running and walking teams have already taken up the challenge for the next race, that will see team members each having to complete a 4.2km lap around the lake and stadium precinct in relay format. The Investec Night Relay series takes place on the first Thursday of the month and will conclude with round 4 on 6 September
The Reach for a Dream Foundation inspires hope in children who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Reach for your Slippers initiated in Kwazulu Natal and this year it became a national campaign, encouraging companies and schools to purchase tickets at R10 each and slide into their slippers on Friday 3August in support of making dreams a reality. All funds raised in the Eastern Cape will be used for local children.
The Investec Night Relay, which is being hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency, takes place from the lakeside lawns of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and starts at 18h00, with registration open from 16h00. Gamble Pharmacy currently holds the course record of 21 km in 1 hour 7 minutes which was set during round 2 earlier this month with the Rhino Plastics walking team having the walk record of 12.6km in 1 hour 26 minutes.
