My premise around this thought piece is based on one salient fact – In a court of law a lawyer will never ask a question of a witness without knowing what that answer from said witness will be!
The further assumption then is that during question and answer time politicians (who have a whole swathe of advisers political, legal and otherwise) will, by extension, never ask questions in parliament to which they do not already know the answers.
South Africa needs all the help that it can get in order to weather this particular storm that we are going through – corruption is the new normal and we are fast losing faith in all politicians who just seem to be fighting for power for all the wrong reasons. Case in point: Most parties talk about one unified, glorious, prosperous South Africa in one breath and in the next spew poison against their fellow South Africans who just happen to be in political opposition to them. Go figure.
Personally – I am looking for that one political party (or politician) who will put ‘South Africa First, Citizens Second and Self Last!’
The Rand is being pummeled by the markets after Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane asked SA President Cyril Ramaphosa to clarify policy certainty around the South African Reserve Ban (SARB). Ramaphosa introduced the word that makes everyone (especially bankers, investors and financiers) very nervous – NATIONALISATION – when in his reply he said that nationalising the reserve bank was not a “mad programme” thought up by the ANC but an international practice of countries wholly owning their central banks.
Our simple measure – MyPE’s Daily #RandHealthCheck shows that the Rand is not a well puppy and is crashing under the pressure of that simple question asked by Maimane.
Yes, we have all heard that cANCer needs to be cut out in order for healing to take place BUT, do we need to do that as well as harm all the innocent bystanders?
Of course the other question also needs answers; “Did Ramaphosa, or his speech writer or anyone else with prior knowledge of what he was going to say profit from this?”
In these sensitive times I wonder about whether the ‘Victory at all costs’ attitude of the opposition party is the right way to fix South Africa!
