Springbok legends Schalk Burger senior, Garth Wright, Dr Hannes Marais, Warren Brosnihan and De Wet Barry raised R200 000 for Port Elizabeth needy causes in Port Elizabeth when they donned white aprons and brandished spatulas in a “Springboks cooking for charity”.
Nearly 300 ardent Bok supporters were at the dinner, which was held – fittingly – at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Sports Centre.
In addition to good food from favourite Bok recipes, guests learned the inside story behind some of the Springbok’s greatest moments, as well as forecasts and concerns for the World Cup.
The legends were right about Bismark du Plessis being called on to replace captain John Smit as hooker after half time in the Springboks narrow victory against Wales in their opening match for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in Wellington, New Zealand on Sunday 11 September.
The beneficiaries are the Eastern Province Child and Youth Care Centre, Child Welfare SA Eastern Cape and the MTR Smit Children’s Haven.
The placemats on the evening were rugby-inspired drawings by the children from the EP Child and Youth Care Centre, Child Welfare SA Eastern Cape and MTR Smit.
