Putting a sparkle into young lives

Christmas lights have kept sparkling well into the new year for 100 disadvantaged children in Port Elizabeth.

They were given new hard-wearing leather school shoes purchased with funds raised by The Boardwalk’s annual Christmas carols and sparkler event yesterday, 5 February 2014 at The Boardwalk.

Sparkler sales on the evening of Wednesday, December 18 raised R7 495.

The amount was doubled by The Boardwalk, according to The Boardwalk’s corporate social investment manager Peggy Mokhatla.
Zonwabise Resort Holdings also donated stationery worth R5 000 to the children.

Zonwabise Resort Holdings is the empowerment shareholder in Emfuleni Resorts, owner of The Boardwalk and Fish River Sun.
“The event was such a success that we intend hosting it every year. We are sure it will become a highlight of the Nelson Mandela Bay summer season,” says Caley Phillips, public relations and entertainment manager at The Boardwalk.

Some of the children who were given the shoes also attended the carols evening and were treated to a day out at The Boardwalk.
These included lunch, movies and a take-away, as well as games and rides at the Magic Company.

When the children left after the carols they were each given a take-away hamburger to eat on the bus which was hired specially to carry the children in safety.

“Being able to make a difference in the lives of the needy makes the event that much more special,” she says.
