Professor Karabus, accompanied by his lawyer, Michael Bagraim arrives in Port Elizabeth on 24 June ahead of speaking at the Abraham Levy Synagogue Hall that evening at 19h00. (Details here).
South African doctor Professor Cyril Karabus, 78, was arrested in August while in transit in the UAE concerning charges laid against him by the family of a Yemeni child in 2003. Mr Bagraim is Prof Karabus’s lawyer who, along with the Karabus family, launched a media campaign to help get the specialist pediatric oncologist released and returned home.
Prof Karabus spent 57 days in the jail and the rest of the time at an expatriate South African’s home awaiting the final outcome of his case and the subsequent appeals process.
The final release of the charges against him was by the UAE medical council that cleared him of guilt in early May 2013. However, he still had a tedious process to go through in getting his passport returned and clearing his name from a fugitive databank.
At he time of his release his Cape Town based lawyer, Michael Bagraim, said: “Dr Karabus’s case shows the pitfalls of working in a foreign country that uses a language we (South Africans) don’t understand and has a legal system which is foreign to us.” He said the UAE does not have a civil code, meaning that all cases are tried criminally. “In SA, if someone has a complaint against a doctor, then the case usually goes to a civil court. There (the UAE) they don’t do this,” he said.
Interested members of the public interested in hearing Professor Karabus and Michael Bagraim speak on 24 June 2013 can book with Michelle Brown on 084 222 9347. The entrance fee of R120.00 will include a light supper.
