After 20 years of democracy South Africa goes to the polls once again on 7 May 2014 when citizens will vote for which parties they want to represent them in the National Assembly and their respective Provincial houses of parliament.

In a maturing democracy the subtle shifts of power are beginning to be displayed and much is being placed on the vote of the youths who were free born. Once again the allegiance of the youth seems to be fractured along socio-economic lines with the ruling party – the ANC – seeming to lose out on being the champion of the poor, a position scooped up by the eager hands of Julius Malema and his EFF.

The DA is still struggling with a way to effectively counter the accusation of only representing white moneyed people. COPE seems to be fading after their public in-fighting and the sleeping giant appears to be the NFP – a faction that broke away from the IFP just before the last elections.

Of course the accusation laid at the feet of the IEC’s door that the payment to contest the elections is far too high still resonates amongst the smaller parties who have to pay the same sum as parties with large war chests.

In the Eastern Cape elections all eyes will be on the race between the DA and ANC.
