Peter Williams was from PE and he swam for SA in the olympics, cant rememebr the exact year but it was post elections – they removed sanctions at the last minute and he went to swim. Unfortunately he had just had a shoulder op the previous december and was out of training because he was told that sanctions wouldnt be lifted in time for the team to take part in the Olympics, and at the last minute our guys got in and swam with little or no training…. it was a momentous occasion!
You are so right Heather and I feel the absolute dunce for not recalling that. Peter was at school with me and in the same swimming team, although in comparison to him you would have said that I was in the ‘floundering team’!
Peter set a world record in the 50 metre freestyle. He placed third in the 50 metre freestyle at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and fourth at the 1992 Summer Olympics. At the Olympics he also competed on the South African teams in 4×100 metre freestyle relay and 4×100 metre medley relay, but without reaching the final.
