The Port Elizabeth Splash Festival is probably our largest community driven event of the year. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality uses ratepayer money to kickstart the funding of the event and every year we have the same old question coming up; “What is the tangible and measurable benefit that accrues to the city as a result of the Splash Festival”?
One of the measurable benefits to the city is the number of tourists that that visit our neck of the woods as a direct result of the Splash Festival attracting them here. Sure, there are other benefits such as raising the brand profile but, for the purposes of this exercise it would be interesting to see just how many bed nights accommodation were sold in Port Elizabeth that can be directly attributable to the Splash Festival.
We invite all Guest House, BNB, Self Catering, Camping, Hotel and other Accommodation owners to please give an indication below of just how many bed nights they sold this 2012 Splash Festival Easter Weekend that can be directly attributable to the Splash Festival.
Please send a link to this article to as many accommodation owners that you can.

If you sold more than 20 then please let us know how many via the contact section.
We would appreciate your answers to these questions as well.
If you have the time I woould like your valuable input – if you could answer one or all of the questions below:
- How many bed nights have you sold in the past directly attributable to the Splash Festival?
- If the Splash Festival was advertised sooner would your bookings have increased?
- What types of city wide events result in the most bed nights sold?
- How can the city improve it’s image?
- What type of marketing is required to raise our city’s profile?
- What is the main reason why people visit our city?
- Which other destination is Port Elizabeth’s main rival? (e.g. when people say; “We had to choose between Port Elizabeth and ………….. for our holiday/break).
Use the contact section or mail your answers to alan[at]mype.co.za.

Beds not related to splash festival
Bookings would definitely been better if the SplashFestival was advertised sooner. Our metro (NMB Tourism) need to get their act together in promoting this area. Recently visited Cape Town – no there is a city that knows how to market itself! The Iron Man is a fabulous event for marketing our area.
