Marc May, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander, said; “At 12h07 on Tuesday 20 December, NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following a request for medical assistance from the Chokka fishing boat LAZARUS reporting a 50 year old Port Elizabeth crewman onboard suffering a suspected CVA (Cerebro Vascular Accident – a Stroke).
“They were deep sea off Jeffreys Bay at the time and began heading in the direction of St Francis Bay.
“Our NSRI St Francis Bay volunteers were engaged at our annual fundraising golf day at the time and immediately dropped their clubs to respond to this emergency.
“Our NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft SPIRIT OF ST FRANCIS II and rendezvoused with the fishing boat 14 nautical miles off-shore of Jeffreys Bay.
“Our NSRI medics stabilized the patient onboard their boat, treating the patient for what appears to be a CVA, and the patient was then transferred across to our sea rescue craft and brought to our sea rescue base to a waiting ER24 ambulance and the patient has been transported to a local hospital in a stable condition by ambulance.”
