After recently signing a recording deal with national company Native Rhythms Productions, the seven-piece Port Elizabeth jazz band Take Note will launch their debut album entitled, “Rear Window” on June 23, 2011.
The 14-track album is mixture of contemporary jazz with afro-soul. “It is a reflection of the township traditional songs as well as modern changes in society,” says Take Note manager, Thandile Petshwa.
Songs such as “Sakhile” and “Unonkala” are typical township jazz classics from the early 60s to late 70’s. Other tracks such as “All in your eyes” signify the emerging tradition of Afro-Soul.
The group is driven by the need to rewrite music from the times of Sophia Town – when artists would sing about daily events, and this is reflected in the passion and emotions of the album.
“To all those who missed out on the township music, this album is for them,” says Petshwa. “It takes passion to make it happen. Jazz is created first in the mind, inspired by one’s passion, and next in playing music.”
Take Note has been together for more than five years and have been resident entertainers at the Zanzibar restaurant in Parliament Street.
They have also shared the stage with a number of national artists including DJ Cleo and Sliq Angel. The group recently performed with jazz legend Retsie Pule in Uitenhage.
The album launch at the Port Elizabeth Opera House will take place on Thursday, June 23 at 19h00. Tickets will be on sale at the door for R40.
The group will also be touring in East London (June 24) and Durban (June 25) for the album launch.
