Popular Ocean Racing Series Reaches Halfway Mark

11 December 2014 By Alan Straton

1km beach walk
Receiving their winners medals on Sunday for the girls 7 to 8 yrs 1km beach walk were Cristin Beattie, Megan Owen and Abbie Mitchell.
The 10th season of the 2014 aQuellé Ocean Racing Series™ reached the half way stage on Sunday with the first 5 rounds of the Series having been completed and whilst another 5 await participants in the first half of 2015 several participants have already staked their claim at the overall Series crown. Brigitte Muller (1km Swim), Megan Snyman (5km Beach Run), Dylan Finlay (5km Beach Run) and Milé Vermaak (5km Beach Walk) have all gone unbeaten so far this season.

Conditions on Sunday were anything but ideal as swimmers battled against stong winds and strong currents to complete their ocean swim. Wayne Jones and Muller had comfortable wins in the 1km Ocean Swim with Ian Venter and Joshua Bellairs claiming the remaining men’s podium positions and Amy Mardon and Tracy Taverner the ladies. With conditions getting progressively worse as the morning progressed it was the 2km swimmers who battled the most but this didn’t seem to deter Kirsten Marriott from winning her second title of the Season when she beat Rebecca Newman and Liza Kingston to the line with Bradley Reen claiming his first win of the season in the men’s category from top East London based SA triathlete, Nathan Le Roux, with Richard Gilbert in 3rd place.

Contending with the strong onshore winds, things weren’t that much easier for the runners and walkers with Finlay and Snyman winning round 5 and Frederick Jantjies claiming his 4th runner up medal of the Season comfortable ahead of 3rd placed Sibusiso Macamba whilst Samantha Perselson got silver in the ladies race with Annemieke Mock in 3rd place. Leading the walkers for Round 5 was Colin Korkie with Johan Ferreira and Inus Baard in 2nd and 3rd respectively whilst Vermaak remains unbeaten by taking gold from Lynette Daniel and Michelle Geel this week.

The increasingly popular aQuellé kids 1km beach run is seeing children from as young as 2 years old taking place and enjoying the family vibe on alternate Sundays. This week Aiden Joubert and Tayla Wilson won the gold in the 6 years and under category whilst Jayson Archibald and Abbie Mitchell won the 7 to 8 year category, Matthew Loon and Zanri Black the 9 to 10 age group and Aidan Finlay and Kayla Ferreira the 11 to 12 years category.

The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series returns to Hobie Beach on for Round 6 on Sunday 4th January, see www.oceanracingseries.com for further information.

Dylan and Ntandokazi
15 year old Dylan Finlay remains unbeaten in the 5km Beach Run this season, pictured here with fellow under 16 gold medal winner Ntandokazi Baxana.
