Please Tell Me that my Assumptions are Wrong Minister Cele!

30 January 2023 By Alan Straton

Nelson Mandela Bay has been under siege lately with accelerated gang violence in the Northern Areas leaving 7 (or more?) dead.

That violence has now spread over to Kwazakhele where 8 people were killed at a house party in Gqeberha.

Admittedly 8 is more than 7 and one wonders if there is a conversation going on in the Minister’s Office:

AIDE: “Minister, gang violence is escalating in Gqeberha’s Northern Areas with 7 people dead so far!”

CELE: “Gqeberha’s Northern Areas is where most of the non-ANC voters live, am I right?”

AIDE: “Your assumptions are correct, my leader. BUT, it is behoven upon me to remind you that your office represents ALL South Africans – even those who didn’t vote for you!”

CELE: “You’re fired”

NEW AIDE: “Minister Cele there has been a suspected gang related shooting in Kwazakhele with 8 people dead!”

CELE: “Kwazakhele is an ANC stronghold is it not?”

NEW AIDE: “Yes my leader and the body count is more than 5 which is an automatic trigger for a field trip to press the flesh, hand out empty promises, T-Shirts and food parcels.”

CELE: “Fuel the jet, let’s go people!”

And there you have it: The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola will today at 11h00 lead a delegation of various experts within the organisation to the crime scene of the Kwazakhele mass shooting in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.

On Sunday 29 January, between 17h15 and 17h30, the owner of the Kwazakhele house was celebrating his birthday when two unknown gunmen entered the yard in Makanda Street and started shooting at the guests. Seven people (3 females and 4 males) were fatally injured while another four people (2 females and 2 males) sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment. One of the victims succumbed to the injuries in hospital, bringing the total number of deceased to eight. The owner of the house was among the deceased.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects while an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this attack is underway. No arrests have been made at this stage.

The identity of the deceased and injured are still to be established.

The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation are investigating a case of murder (x8 counts) and 3 cases of attempted murder.

Lt Gen Mene has condemned the killings as cowardice and a blatant disregard for human life and has ordered the team of investigators to track and trace the perpetrators in the quickest time possible. She also appealed to the community to ‘ come forward with any information and not to harbour the criminals. These victims were killed by criminals and we will not rest until we find out what happened and who was responsible for these callous and cold blooded attack on these unsuspecting victims.’

Go On – Share the Gqeberha Love!
