ORS Second Last Round Results

4 March 2015 By Alan Straton

The penultimate round for Season 10 of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series took place last Sunday in great ocean conditions which saw some fast times and a second 1km Ocean Swim win for Ian Venter ahead of the current Series leader Wayne Jones and runner up Joshua Bellairs.

The 1km Ocean Swim, the most popular event on the morning with 154 entries, witnessed a sprint finish up the beach in the ladies race as Amy Mardon came within centimeters of beating the undefeated 1km ladies champion, Brigitte Muller of Framesby High School, with master swimmer Antonella Saporta in third place. These three ladies also dominate the overall standings in the ladies category which shouldn’t be effected by the results from round 10 on the 15th March whilst Jones and Bellairs have secured the top two spots in the Men’s standings and third place will be decided between PJ Duffy and Venter at the last round.

Over the longer 3km distance, it was a three way tussle for line honours with Daniel Jones winning his 4th race of the Series from brother Jason with Dylan Smith placing 3rd whilst Rebecca Newman continued her impressive form to register her first win of the Series and possibly the overall title by beating Denise Bosman and Liza Kingston on the morning. Whilst Daniel has done enough to secure the overall 3km title, Jason and Bradley Reen will fight it out for the bronze and Silver whilst Kirsten Marriott could still take the ladies title from Newman with a top 3 finish in the last round whilst Kingston has secured 3rd place.

15 year old Dylan Finlay continues to impress with his 9th win this Series in the 5km Beach Run, this week beating Likhaya Rooi and Siyanda Jacobs with 13 year old Megan Snyman securing her 6th win of the Series but still needing to take part in the final round to ensure Sunday’s runner up Samantha Perelson can’t overtake her. Annemieke Mock placed 3rd on Sunday morning but will require one more race to claim the Series bronze medal from Bernadette Meistre.

The kids 12 years and under contesting the 1km Beach Run always have a great time and Sunday saw new winners in almost all of the age group categories. Liam Marais and Rachel Woods took the gold in the 6 years and under age group, Jayson Archibald and Abbie Mitchell won the 7 to 8 years category, Mats Mock and Lara Kleinhans the 9 to 10 age group whilst Juan Baard and Bella Archibald won the gold in the 11 to 12 years age group.

The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series returns for round 10 on Sunday 15th March and will be followed immediately  thereafter by the final Series prize giving ceremony at News Cafe from 11am to 1pm. See www.oceanracingseries.com for further information.
