One Dies as Stone Wall Collapses on Marine Drive

21 May 2012 By Port Elizabethan

A wall has fallen over, injuring workers on Marine Drive.

The wall is on the Humewood Beach side of the Barneys Pub, Shark Rock Pier.

One worker was killed and second badly injured.

Eye on Community

Editor’s Notes: The stone wall fell over whilst workers were excavating a trench to lay cables to carry telephone and bandwidth traffic. Am I being unfair by saying that I can already seeing lawyers getting rich as the various contractors, sub-contractors and municipal authorities point fingers at each other.

A question came up around the breakfast table as to whether the necessary safety measures were taken – ie securing / stabilizing the wall before they started to dig the trench? Couldnt really judge by looking at the photograph.

I did go and see if I could get a photo. On arrival I realised that a photo of a wall fallen down was, well, pretty pointless and inconclusive.

With hindsight a couple of things spring to mind: When was any maintenance done? The man who builds his house on sand will have problems. The actual trench does not look that deep to raise any concerns in (at least) my mind should I have been working there. It could have been one of those situations where water created a weak point and gravity just took over when it was further weakened by digging – tragic but a true accident.
