NSRI assists yachts into Port of Port Elizabeth

Justin Erasmus, NSRI Port Elizabeth deputy station commander, said; “At 14h55, Tuesday, 09th December, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following a request for assistance from the 57 foot mono hull yacht NAE HASSLE reporting to be taking water through her forard bow thruster and her bilge pump not coping to expel water fast enough, with 3 crew onboard, an Irish skipper, a Canadian crew member, both males and a Croation female crew member, 2 nautical miles off-shore of Port Elizabeth, sailing from Richards Bay to Ireland.

“NSRI Port Elizabeth launched our sea rescue craft EIKOS RESCUER IV and on arrival on-scene NSRI crew were transferred onboard the yacht and assisted to bail water and we escorted the yacht safely into Port where she berthed and temporary repairs will be carried out before she goes to Saldanha Bay for extensive repairs on dry dock.”

“Then at 17h25 we responded to rendezvous with the bulk carrier NYK LAURA, sailing from Brazil to Singapore, 2 nautical miles off-shore of Port Elizabeth, to patient evacuate a 33 year old Filipino crewman suffering suspected appendicitis.

“On arrival on-scene NSRI medics went aboard the ship and escorted the patient down the pilots ladder and he was brought into the Port of Port Elizabeth aboard our sea rescue craft EIKOS RESCUER IV and their ships agent has transported him to hospital for further treatment.

“NSRI Port Elizabeth are on stand by for the yacht FREE BIRD, with 2 crew onboard, reporting vibrations in her propeller shaft, and heading towards Port Elizabeth and may require assistance to get into Port.”
