North End Cemetery Fencing Recovered in Sidwell Scrapyard

8 May 2023 By Alan Straton

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s law enforcers made a swift recovery of nine panels of palisade fencing that were stolen from the North End Cemetery on Friday, 05 May 2023.

This comes after NMBM Public Health officials noted in the morning that the panels were stolen, presumably in the early hours on Friday, as the fencing had been in place on Thursday.

Following the recovery, the officials embarked on a search for the stolen panels and decided to visit nearby metal scrap yards.

Through the intervention of the NMBM Rapid Response Task Team, the stolen panels were recovered from the Sidwell Scrap Metals CC.

“We want to thank our diligent officials for the successful recovery of the panels as they took it upon themselves to look for the fencing. Working together with our Security Services and Metro Police, we have managed to get back Municipality infrastructure within a few hours. An investigation is currently underway concerning the matter and the scrap yard owner has given us all the necessary details concerning the seller of the material and we will take it from there.”

“We want to urge all scrap yard owners to refrain from buying stolen property. These incidents take back the development of our Metro. We should not be stealing from the very facilities, it is even worse when you steal from a place such as a cemetery, that is not an ordinary place. We need all stakeholders including residents and business owners to say no to vandalism and work with us. The constant vandalism that takes place at cemeteries is concerning,” MMC Buyeye said.

Residents are urged to report all acts of vandalism to Municipal infrastructure on the anti-vandalism hotline 0415065500.
