NMMU Students Reach out to Community

A group of second year NMMU Public Relations students have beenchallenged by their lecturer, Brightness Mangalothi, to apply their knowledge in practice.

Their assignment is to create awareness about Khanya Youth Development Centre in New Brighton, and provide for short term goals such a food, toys and cooking utensils.

Following the success of last year’s group of second year students, this year’s group will once again provide for the needs of NGO named Khanya Youth Development Centre, situated in New Brighton and run from the Edward Congregational Hall.

As a group they aim to recruit as many sponsors as possible for the NGO.

The centre operates as an aftercare which provides nutritional and educational assistance needs for approximately 70 children between the ages of five and 18. These children are among the under privileged within the community. It is run by four volunteers who offer their time by cooking and helping with homework activities. One of the volunteers said “we are blessed to have students every year that helps us to uplift the centre”.

Some of the centre’s needs were previously provided for by local retailers, but could not be sustained. It is therefore up to the group to once again seek sponsorships.

“As a group we do not want to have an expensive event, but rather provide for the immediate needs of Khanya Centre and at the same time for the needs of our peers”, said Alicia Maclean, the group leader. “We are excited at the thought of a simple act of kindness that will potentially make a difference to the lives of 70 children in the New Brighton area”, she says. The other members of the group are Nandi Fazzie, Phumela Mkalipi, Sinoxolo Mbem and Siseko Pupa.
