As Port Elizabeth celebrates a century as a city, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is calling on all students, staff and alumni to capture the city’s landmarks in photographs – but with the university’s values in mind.
The best of these city photographs will then be shared at an exhibition by the university in November.
And in return, there will be monetary rewards for the top ten photographers with the overall winner receiving a cash prize of R5000 and the opportunity to host a two-week solo exhibition.
“The university is part of this city and so, in line with our values, we’d like to celebrate the centenary,” says NMMU’s Archive and Exhibition Centre Curator Christelle Nel.
Port Elizabeth is 100 years old as a municipality and city but far older as a town and settlement going back to the erection of Fort Frederick in 1799.
The competition is open to anyone with ties to the university as a past or present student or as a staff member.
“The entries should capture something of the city and be aligned to a value of the university,” says Christelle.
A rationale of 100 words or less should accompany the entry highlighting why the photograph represents a particular value.
NMMU’s values are respect for the natural environment, integrity, respect for diversity, excellence, taking responsibility and Ubuntu.
The parameters for entries are A2 (420 x 594mm) format suitable for exhibition, but entries can be mailed in lower resolution for judging purposes. The winning photographs will be displayed at the 100 years of history exhibition at the Archives Exhibition Centre on Second Avenue Campus in November.
If an image is chosen as a winner, the entrant will have to supply a high resolution image suitable for print (A2 at 300dpi). For the purposes of entry, images can be e-mailed in low resolution (72dpi, 420 x 594mm), approximately 1MB to Christelle.nel@nmmu.ac.za.
A full judging panel will assess the photographs. Entries close on 27 September.
