NMB Cross Country Series – First Edition Results

The first league of the Nelson Mandela Bay Cross Country League Series kicked off on a high note on Saturday, at the St Albans Correctional Services, with nearly 600 competitors.

EP Athletics cross country chairperson, Attie Williams, was very happy with the support of the athletes.

“The increase in competitors is mainly due to the ASA Cross-Country National Championships that will be hosted by EPA during September 2023,” reported Attie.

“The competition was fierce between the athletes participating in a range of different age categories with good times recorded for the start of the season,” he added.

The 10km race was won by Cwenga Nose, running for Ikhamva athletics club, in a time of 31.49, followed by Keanu Domingo, of North West University in 32.15, with Andile Motwani, of Nedbank running club, in third position in 32.29.

Katelyn Wolff, of Achilles athletics club, continued her strong running season, to finish first in the 10km with a significant lead in 42.07. Asanda Zamisa, of Sibaleka Nani athletics club,
finished second in 46.07, followed by Sibongile Mgqeba, of Vukani athletics club, in 51.29.

The 4km Men’s race was dominated by the Ikhamva athletic club’s promising young athletes, first home was Sinethemba Jilingisi in 12.47, followed by Sinawo Poti, in 12.51.

Phathutshedzo Tlou, of Madibaz athletics club, finished in third position in 14.02.

Adri Wessels, of Run4Christ athletics club was the first woman to finish the 4km in 16.24, followed by Jene Banfield, of Run4Christ athletics club, in 17.16, with Dane Cronje, of Charlo
athletics club, in third position in 17.58.

The NMB Cross Country Series will consist of four league meetings, EPA Championships and an Inter-Provincial planned to prepare the athletes for the upcoming National Championships.

Prize money has been allocated to the top three male and female athletes participating in
the 10km and Open 4km.

The next second Cross Country League event will take place from 10am at Varsvlei on 13
May.
