NMB Council Puts a Damper on MBDA’s 20 Year Celebrations

The month of August 2023 is a month of celebrations for the Mandela Bay Development Agency as they mark 20 years in existence.

It would appear, with one year to go to the magic 21, that the child birthed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Council is now being spanked by its parents for employing a former Golden Handshake recipient – Anele Qaba – as its CEO.

In a Council Meeting held on 22 August 2023 Council voted to curb the actions of the MBDA Board and gave notice of that to the MBDA in a 23 August 2023 letter signed by City Manager Noxolo Nqwazi.

Council has now given notice to the MBDA that:

  1. The municipality will take steps to remove the board of the MBDA on the basis of unsatisfactory performance of it’s members
  2. The municipality will seek to review and set aside the appointment of Mr Qaba as CEO of the MBDA.

In addition the municipality warned the MBDA that neither the MBDA board nor the CEO of the MBDA may make any further decisions on behalf of the MBDA, whether of a binding nature or not, pending implementation of the Council resolutions and that should any decision be taken contrary to instructions which has a financial implication, such finances will be recovered from the person/s responsible for such decisions.

Asked for comment the MBDA said; “We have responded in writing to council, and the outcomes of that process will be shared in due course”.
